“Colour is a place where our brain and the universe meet.” Paul Klee

Colour is a characteristic of human visual perception described through colour categories. It is everything we see, touch, taste, smell and feel, we are surrounded by an endless colour rainbow. It conveys & evokes emotions & plays a huge role in the way we perceive the world.

Colour is an element in all design, it’s an important aspect for most creatives from artists to graphic & interior designers, we all try balance & build perfect compositions. It’s beauty is simple, but oh so very complex.

Home of Dutch top colour tips.

  • Trends come & go, but when choosing a colour for your home always go with something you love & you will never be disappointed.
  • Finding inspiration for that perfect colour, a good place to start would be your own wardrobe it’s a clear indication of what you already like. Existing art work is also a great for colour inspiration.
  • It’s important that colours themselves balance and complement each other. Our tip would be to use a colour wheel, it’s a visual representation of which colours blend well together & will assist greatly in matching ideal colour combinations. Analogous colours fall next to each other on the wheel, generally three is a charm. While complementary are directly opposite.
  • Another top tip our team at Home of Dutch likes to use in interiors is 60-30-10 colour rule. “This rule simply states that for the most balanced, appealing look, you should choose a three-colour palette for decorating a room, and use it as follows: Decorate 60% of the room with the dominant colour (walls). Decorate 30% of the room with the secondary colour (upholstery). Use the remaining colour as an accent in 10% of the space (accessories). This little rule will help simplify choosing your colour scheme & achieve balance.
  • Balance with black, it’s a secret trick that’s been used in photography & imagery for years & works wonderfully in interiors. It adds depth & character, elevating your space with elegance. Black can be used to accentuate a specific detail or area.
