Pretty Ribbon

Beautiful Flowers

Green Foliage

Make A Beautiful Unique Flower Hoop Wreath.

We created these for the wedding, but just think how lovely they’d look in your bedroom & depending on what foliage you use, you can make them to last, for endless joy. And an added bonus, dried flowers & leaves are all the home decor craze right now.

You will need:

  • Circle hoops, you can find them in sliver, gold or even wooden bamboo in a variety of sizes.
  • Greenery, our personal favorite is eucalyptus as it drys really well & we just love the colour. But there are many other options, go explore your garden or a local florist.
  • Flowers – a few great choices for drying, we recommend baby’s breath, hydrangeas & roses. Get adventurous and add dried pampas grass.
  • Ribbon – we added this for a bit of extra fun & texture. Combine hessian ribbons with a silk satin type. We chose natural, earthy tones, but you get creative on your choice of colours.
  • Other – Garden pruner or sharp scissors, & a stapler.
  • Florist tape & wire or otherwise you can use a home sewing thread preferably in a green colour similar to the leaves.

Directions to creating a flower hoop wreath:

  1. Get all the items on your list & lay them out on your work station.
  2. Start by laying your circular hoop down first in front of you.
  3. If you’d like to add ribbon we would recommend doing so before starting with the foliage, you can double up the ribbon & staple it around the hoop.
  4. Cut the greenery you’d like to use, use long stems so that they can wrap up the sides of the hoop. Fasten a piece of thread or florist tape to the hoop & wrap it around the leaves to secure the leaves to the hoop.
  5. Cut short stems on the flowers you would like to use, you should be able to slide the stems of the flowers in between the leaves, again you can run the thread around to secure. Get creative and see what looks good.
  6. Remember to have fun & enjoy to process.

Huisje James & De Cantharel Apeldoorn

A year ago to the day, my beautiful sister in law & brother said “I do” in the stunning location of Ugchelen, near the city of Apeldoorn.

Situated in the gorgeous green surroundings of the Veluwe, you will find the enchanting & charming little house of Huisje James.

Before the magical day of the wedding we were invited to Huisje James to decide on a menu for the day of the wedding, I was fortunate enough to tag along with Jo & Den as I had the honor of helping them put together their special day.

We parked our car at Van Der Valk Hotel,
and walked along the gravel path past the hotel & magnificent veggie garden, by the sweet smelling lavender bushes we turned up the winding path & walked towards the avenue of sweeping trees, as you come around the corner you are greeted by a warm welcoming smell of a wood burning fire & the quaint cottage, which is called De Werkplaats/The Workshop. The old barn was used as a workshop, by the previous residents the James family, who used to restore vintage cars.

Exploring De Werkplaats & Huisje James

When we walked into De Werkplaats, there was someone was playing the grand piano, the sound echoed beautifully through the room and so began a lovely evening of fine dining.

The special day

The day of the wedding was truly amazing & the staff at Huisje James excelled.

There are many reasons as to why Jo & Den chose this beautiful venue, besides the enchanting exterior, the interiors are just as inviting, and each little corner has it’s own story to tell. The coziness is alluring & we just love the warm, rustic interiors of Huisje James.

Stay the night at Van Der Valk – de Cantharel, the luxurious rooms are modern & fresh, & the hotel has a unique, super stylish feel. This will give you an extra opportunity to explore more of this exquisite place.

Chalked it. With chalk paint.

We love giving old/used furniture a new lease on life, by adding a layer or more of awesomeness✨ Over the years I’ve painted more pieces of furniture than I can even remember from small to big & everything in between, tables, chairs, sideboards, cupboards...

Revive your Kitchen

Without breaking the bank this kitchen revamp is something you can easily accomplish in your own home, giving your kitchen a fresh new look.

A Quick & Cost Effective Kitchen Facelift.

This kitchen is situated in one of our garden cottages which we are currently using as a work studio, it needed a quick & cost effective facelift to complement the decor & feel of the rest of the interior space.

And with a wave of a brush, we achieved a brand new look, the magic of paint never ceases to amaze me, beautifully transforming a space every time.

Here are the steps we took:

 Out with the old:

– We removed the outdated tiles & top cupboard to open up the space.

Add a little paint & wallpaper:

– We then painted the previously tiled wall with a dark grey textured paint. Paint required to achieve this look: If you live in South Africa – Fired earth Suedette Light Flannel.  Europe – Pure & Original Chalk paint/Krijtverf Thunder Sky www.pureandoriginal.nl

– We wanted a feature wall and needed  some contrast against the dark grey & went with Pure Home Demure Light Wallpaper Ref 15005. This is one of my brothers designs, which I love! He really got me hooked on using wall coverings in almost all of my design projects, it really elevates a room to another stylish level, adding a unique artistic touch. This wallpaper is available in Europe at www.wecobv.nl or in South Africa at www.wallcoverings.co.za

– We then needed to update the kitchen cupboards, and we choose Annie Sloan chalk paint which is a great go to paint for all sorts of projects, chalk paint adheres to furniture beautifully without usually the use of a primer depending on the piece. A quick cleaning is typically all you need & you’re ready to start painting. We used the colour Graphite, two or three coats will be needed. And then seal with Annie Sloan clear wax. The wax is hard wearing & I’ve used it successfully in a few kitchens. In my own kitchen the wax has lasted for over two years and the dirt just wipes off, but if you’re looking for a more durable product with a bit more shine the Annie Sloan lacquer is also available, just be aware that it slightly darkens your paint colour, as does the wax. www.anniesloan.com

In with the new:

– We added new matt black handles as a finishing touch to the cupboards.

– We transformed the counters with reclaimed pine wood that we still had from a previous project, we measured the area, then cut the wood to fit. We added a thin wooden cross beam to the bottom of the planks to hold them together. We wanted a darker, warmer colour than the pine so we stained the wood with an oak/teak wood stain & then added Annie Sloan white wax to highlight the rustic look of the wood.

Styling to bring it all together:

– And then for the fun part, the magic of putting it all together.

– No look would be complete without some beautiful green plants.

– In a kitchen you need chopping boards! They come in all different shapes & sizes & are a display piece all on their own.

– Baskets bring great textures to any room, and in a kitchen they are perfect for storage & can double up as a tray.

Design Joburg South Africa 2019

In May, Gauteng’s premier, contemporary & decorative design show, Design Joburg, Rooms on view, took place at the Sandton convention centre.

A combination of local and global pioneers, the show hosts some of the worlds finest talents in design & displays a wealth of inspiration.

A few of our favourites in the field of interior design.

Donald Nxumalo, who’s style & talent is sophisticated, intuitive & proudly South African. We just love the elegant & beautiful interiors that he puts together.

La Grange Interiors, with an exquisite range of home decor items from furniture to accessories sourced from all around the globe. We must admit that the timeworn pieces are one of the reasons we love their style so much.

The Storer, it all begins with a story & their’s is a beautiful one. The crafters from which they source their unique treasures are part of that story & The Storer celebrates the creators of each beautiful piece. We loved their stand at the show, but we often visit them at their store for inspiration & for truly gorgeous timeless decor & accessories.
